“i see your face in every sunrise…

…the colors of the morning are inside your eyes” (phil wickham)

I flew to Nashville, TN from Oklahoma City yesterday. I woke up at 4 am so that I could get ready and be at the airport by 5:20 so that I would catch my flight at 6:20. AM. That’s really early in case you didn’t know. I tried to go to bed by 10pm the night before but couldn’t fall asleep until 11:30. That’s really unusual for me and I was quite frustrated because I anticipated being tired the entire next day. It was cold and dark when I woke up yesterday morning. While I was driving to the airport, boarding my flight, and was in the air I kept thinking of all the people that were sleeping. I was jealous. As I was flying over thousands of people in their warm beds, enjoying their pajamas… I was jealous.

It was still dark outside as we were making our descent into Memphis. A little bit of light was on the horizon but not much. I was sitting on the other side of the plane and wouldn’t have been able to see the sunrise anyway. I was hoping I would, but I didn’t. I did however get to see the sun right after it had surfaced above the clouds. As the plane was turning around, this is what I saw:

I was supposed to have my phone turned off at this point but I had to get a photo! Isn’t it beautiful?

As we descended through three layers of clouds I realized that all those people cozy in their beds or even awake in their houses had not yet experienced the light of the sun that day. The clouds were so thick that it still looked dark when we got closer to the ground. Some might say that anytime before the sun rises is an “ungodly hour” but after what I saw, I might have to say that 7 am could possibly be one of the most Godly hours I’ve ever experienced. I was no longer jealous. I felt blessed to see what I had seen. I still can’t get over how truly beautiful it was to see the sun light up the sky. I was sad to see it go as we landed but was looking forward to my connecting flight when I’d see it again.

Get up extra early sometime and watch the sunrise. Actually… let’s make a date and go watch it together. You won’t be disappointed.

The day is yours, and yours also the night;

you established the sun and moon.

It was you who set all the boundaries of the earth;

you made both summer and winter.”

Psalm 74:16-17
